The session
had added interest because the cars ran in the opposite direction
to the conventional clockwise direction of the Manfield circuit.
Richards
showed commitment from the opening moments of the session,
sliding off the track on his first run in a cloud of dust!
He wasn't the only one to run out of real estate sweeping
onto the main straight.

It
was an Anxious Time for Team Kiwi as Richards Tried
Unsuccessfully to Close the Gap

By the
half way point Riley had put in a seriously quick time, topping
the time sheet and laying down the gauntlet for the rest of
the field
He pitted.
Richards, as aware as anyone about the importance of grid
position this year, set himself the task of unseating Riley
from the number one spot. He was clearly the quickest on the
circuit, but try as he might the window of opportunity was
lost and he had to settle for the other spot on the front
row of the grid.
Angus
Fogg and Kevin Bell rounded out the second row on the grid,
setting the scene for a titanic Nissan/BMW battle to decide
who would win the 2000/01 Championship
