Ian
Spurle commenced his motorsport career in karting and progressed
over the next 4 years to become a key member in the New Zealand
team that won the Trans Tasman Challenge Series in 1981. From
there he moved into the formula Ford class and by his third season
in this class had the National championship title. From there
Ian travelled to England to further his career and worked for
fellow kiwi Dick Bennets West Surrey Racing Formula 3 team, and
ended up as mechanic for Mika Hakinen's championship winning team.
In 1990 Ian returned to drive an Alfa Romeo 2 ltr touring car
and immerged at the end of his season national championship. After
returning from England, he joined Kiwi Motorsport Ltd to expand
his racing career, which saw him compete at Bathurst. After an
excellent qualifying session the car was unfortunately sidelined
at half race distance. In 1992 Ian was contracted as senior driving
instructor to the Aztec Star Search. This program involved over
100 drivers being evaluated for the scholarship drive. In 1994/1995
Peugeot Concessionaires NZ invited Ian to drive a Peugeot Mi16
in the NZ round of the Asia Pacific Touring Car Series. Following
this his services were retained for the local inaugural BP Peugeot
series where despite missing the first 2 rounds Ian still went
on to finish 2nd overall. 1995/1996 saw Ian drive a Honda Integra
in the NZ Touring Car Championships where he was a consistent
top 10 placer. In 1997 Ian decided to increase his racing experience
and was offered a drive for Bruce Jenner Racing in a V8 Camaro
in the NZ TraNZam Championship. A bad start to the season with
mechanical problems, slowed his overall finish of 4th overall. |
