Background

Rhys
began his motor racing career at the age of 12, joining the Wanganui
Kart Club. 1988 and 1989 were particularly successful years for
Rhys, winning South Pacific, National and Regional Championships.
He then graduated to a Swift in the 1991 New Zealand Formula Ford
Championship finishing fourth. In 1992 Rhys won the inaugural
Nissan Sentra GT Cup. 1993 was his first year competing in the
New Zealand Touring Car Championship, campaigning an ex- Kieran
Wills Holden Commodore, finishing 5th overall. Following this
he won the four round Nissan Mobil New Zealand Touring Car Championship.
A competitive series of drive in the Degree Summer Touring Car
Series ended during Round Six at Timaru after sustaining severe
race damage. |
